Fibonacci
It's mathematical historical fact time!! In 1202, Fibonacci developed the mathematical series that shares his name by calculating the population spawned by a pair of breeding rabbits. What's not often mentioned is that he wasted most of 1201 due to his insistence on pursuing what he later acknowledged as the 'idiotic and futile path' of analysing the 'somewhat less interesting' series that resulted by considering the future progeny of a pair of procreating rabbis.
