The Demise Of Communism

Often at social gatherings - say, a birthday party of some description - one will find that, after a few drinks and the hostess removing her dress, the topic will turn to Communism and what brought about its demise. A lot of theories will be put forth revolving about human nature and the struggle of the classes and issues such as freedom and democracy and the like. One theory not raised often enough, in my opinion, is that Communism was derailed by the Elton John song 'Nikita', which pointed out to Russian women that they would 'never know' how good it would feel to be held by Elton. Elton further tantalised them in the song with the promise that if there ever came a time where they were 'free to make a choice', Elton would be a-waiting. Can we really discard so easily the impact that this must have had on the Soviet Union? I think not.
