Superman Returns

There have been some criticisms of the smash-hit film Superman Returns since it opened. "They've made Superman gay!" say some. "The film moves too slowly," others have complained. "How dare they make Jimmy Olsen likable!" say a third category. "Do they have no respect for the Superman mythos at all?"

And then, of course, there are those who claim the movie 'borrows' too heavily from Superman 1 and 2, citing the opening titles, Luthor's obsession with real estate and bimbo girlfriends who betray him, The Late Marlon Brando as The Late Jor-El, and even the repetition of certain key quotes as evidence. Perhaps, but it could have been worse. What if director Bryan Singer had chosen instead to give us a blend of the horrific Superman 3 and 4? Exactly.

Regardless, I've seen Superman Remixed twice now and I hereby decree it '100% Routh-nificent'. Sure, some of the critics may have a valid point. But they all ignore one crucial element:

The theme song.

The easiest Sudoku in the world

When that theme song kicks into gear, I don't particularly care what superdeed our favourite Kryptonian is about to pull out. Hell, he could be sitting at home sharpening his pencil to solve the easiest Sudoku in the world for all I care. If he's doing it to that John Williams' theme, I'll be standing on my seat cheering with all my gusto until the ushers threaten to take away my official Terra-Man stetson. The theme song is cinema gold, and as long as Singer has that brassy march up his sleeve, he can pretty much get away with anything.

Having said that, when Yep, Superman's Still Here comes out in a couple of years, they'd better turn Jimmy Olsen back into the annoying twerp all Superman fans know and loathe. There are, after all, limits to what we will tolerate.

Begone,

Indy
