Superman 2

I was watching Superman 2 the other night - truly a cinematic masterpiece with Christopher Reeve (before he died) solid as Superman, but soaring as Clark Kent, Margot Kidder (before she went insane) admirable as Lois Lane, Terence Stamp (before he was in Priscilla) magnificent as the evil General Zod and, of course, Gene Hackman's tour de force as Lex Luthor is sublime.

Combine this with a script that touches on all the big issues: love, loss, redemption, revenge, freedom, responsibility and skin-tight clothing, and a John Williams score that makes you want to get up and fight somebody and you have one of the single greatest motion pictures of all time.

How Gandhi beat it at the Oscars I'll never know. I mean, sure, peaceful resistance and all that. Easy to say when you're a skinny little bald guy with jack-shit for superpowers... what other choice do you have? Of course you're going to peacefully resist.

But if Gandhi had possessed heat vision and super strength and wind breath he would have been out there kicking butt, you mark my words. And just how far is peaceful resistance going to get you when three evil super-villains escape from the Phantom Zone and have a whole heap of superpowers and are going to conquer the world unless somebody stops them? Hmmmm? Did Gandhi ever think of that? I think not.

Hmmmm.... so, what was my point?

Actually, I'm not at all sure any more what my point was. I think it had something to do with the possibility that perhaps Superman's greatest superpower was, in fact, the ability to don a pair of glasses and have a superhuman muscular physique capable of lifting buses and trains suddenly appear as a pathetic nerd weakling.

No, wait, I'm thinking of Gandhi again. Ignore that thought.

Begone,

Indy
