These lyrics flag a dramatic change in the musical tone of Simon and Garfunkel’s smash hit single America as it moves into its thrill-binding second verse.
But am I the only one who finds the lyric puzzling? The only one who wonders why in blazes Art and Paul were spending so much time with Rod Stewart’s original backing band, The Faces, in the first place?
Some people say that’s the poetic genius of Paul Simon. But then again, this is a man who, earlier in the song, put real estate into a bag! So maybe Mr Stewart and friends were there to simply give him some much-needed advice on the ins and outs of property investment.
One thing’s for sure: everybody’s hair sure looked ridiculous.
