Kenny Rogers
Thinking about the song Coward of the County yesterday. You know, as part of my parole requirements. But it occurred violently to me that this song makes no sense at all.
This guy (Tommy) didn't fight anybody, he walked away from trouble when he could and this led him to be considered the most cowardly person in the entire county?!? What is this, the County of Harlem? In my little world, I know plenty of people who don't go around getting into fist-fights every second day - Bob Saget, Terence Stamp and my imaginary friend Ellie, to name but three. And none of them are considered particularly cowardly. Worthy of a little teasing, sure, but nothing exceptional.
So, anyway, Tommy's the coward of the county because he's never had a fight in his life. Bit of a far-fetched premise but let's go with it momentarily. So, finally, for his first fight he decides to take on the Gatlen boys - and let's not forget... there were three of them.
And he wins the fight?! I'm sorry, I don't buy it. I mean, sure twenty years of crawling were bottled up inside him, but really, I don't think that means jack-shit when you're taking on three vicious rapists - particularly ones raised in the most violent county on Earth.
So, I'm sorry, I don't buy it. I ask for nothing more from my country ballads that they be internally logically robust. And Kenny failed to deliver. But, hey, it's still a great message for impressionable young children who are willing to look past the flaws in its underlying logic - sometimes you've got to fight when you're a man.
Thanks, Kenny. I'll remember that when next I bump into Justin Timberlake.
Begone,
