Dire Straits

At least 3 to 6 times a week I have youngsters approach me, fascinated by the music of the 1980s, yet baffled by some of its subtler nuances. Invariably, most of their confusion will arise from megagroup Dire Straits. So let's just set things straight once and for all.

Firstly, if you do a Google search you will discover over half a million people claiming to be 'in dire straits'. Very few of these people were actual members of the band. It's simply a nonsense turn of phrase we used back then, like 'VHS or Beta?' or 'Free Mandela'.

Furthermore, don't be misled by the lyrics of the smash hit single, Money For Nothing. Despite the endless complaints of the chorus, there was nothing difficult about installing microwave ovens. Even back in the primitive 1980s, we still pretty much just plugged them in.

Begone,

Indy
