David Bowie
'Okay Tokyo, South America, Australia, France, Germany, UK, Africaaaah!' This is, of course, the opening to the hit song Dancing In The Streets. I am thinking specifically of the David Bowie/Mick Jagger version here because I am far too lazy to think of any other version, no matter how 'Vandela-riffic' it might be.
Now I am aware that Messrs Bowie and Jagger are not cartographers or experts in world geography. Where, for one thing, would they have found time to become such? Nevertheless, is it too much to ask for some internal consistency? I have chastised Mick Jagger's woolly thinking in the past and, alas, it appears that David Bowie's sense of logical order is equally poor. For why must those countries of South America and Africa suffer the ignominy of being lumped together en masse when Australia, France, Germany and the UK have the glory of being named individually? And what, for the love of Jesus Jones, did the rest of Japan do to incur such an overt Bowie/Jagger snub?
No, it seems that David and Michael's invitation for a bit of street-bopping is highly dependent on what street, precisely, one happens to be inclined to boogie upon. And I can't abide such overt discimination. Wake up, Bowie! Wake up, Jagger! The right to dance is a fundamental human right. Everybody should be permitted to shake one's bootie, regardless of where one resides. All people. All creeds. All races. Old. Young. Tall. Short. Gay. Straight. Man. Woman. Vampire. Werewolf. Whether you want to fandango, tango, Charleston, jazzercise, foxtrot, jitterbug, moonwalk, polka, samba, two-step, tango, waltz or just plain lambada then I will defend to the death your right to do so regardless of your nationality.
Unless, of course, you're Irish. Because that riverdancing shit is totally fucked up.
Begone,
