Chris De Burgh
When it comes to dispensing maritime legal advice in the form of dizzyingly catchy pop music, Mr Chris De Burgh - part time barrister and full-time fan of the crimson-clad feministas - just about gets it right. But not quite.
In his smash hit single, Don't Pay The Ferryman, Chris provides the titular counsel: "Don't pay the ferryman ... until he gets you to the other side". Sensible enough one might think. Pay only for services rendered. Top notch fiscal words of warning from De Burghster.
But it's the lyric omitted in lieu of the ellipsis above that causes all the trouble. For in the full chorus, Christopher is not merely proposing one hold off paying the mysterious ferryman until he completes the requested journey, he's also advising the casual listener to not even 'fix a price'. And that way lies madness. That simple omission could easily lead to a financial windfall for a shrewd enough ferryman. My advice? 1) At least get a contract signed. And 2) Don't travel on ferries at all if you can help it - they just seem crazy dangerous to me.
