Charlie Daniels Band
I think it's fair to say that my favourite country song based on an obscure biblical tale and set in a southern American state has got to be the Charlie Daniels Band's smash hit single The Devil Went Down To Georgia.
In this song, the lead protagonist ('Johnny') is challenged by the devil to a fiddling contest. The terms of the wager? Johnny's soul against a fiddle made of gold. Now, a lot of people have complained about this aspect of the song - pointing out that it would be impossible to play any kind of acceptably melodic tune on a fiddle made of gold and, in fact, it would sound friggin' ridiculous.
Me? I'm just pissed at the devil's poor time management skills. Maybe if he'd spent a little less time at violin practice, boning up on his bowing, fingering and rosin work - all in a, frankly, unlikely bid to out-fiddle the 'best there's ever been' - he wouldn't have got so 'way behind' and been in such 'a bind' on the soul-stealing front in the first place.
Satan, dude. Lift your game. Sure, those Georgian demonic tax breaks are tempting. But eyes on the big picture, man.
Begone,
