Billy Joel

Listening to the radio on the way home the other day when, of a sudden, the melodious and carb-free vocals of Mr William Joel filled the air. As well they might. We're not Philistines.

Uptown Girl. She's been living in her uptown world. I bet she never had a backstreet guy. I bet her mother never told her why. I'm gonna try for an uptown girl.

Short and to the point. But it raises a critical and troublesome dilemma. What, exactly, did the Uptown Girl's mother - Old Lady Brinkley - not explain to Christie? Did she not tell her why she never had a backstreet guy? ('I bet she never had a backstreet guy, I bet her mother never told her why.') Or did she not tell her why Billy's going to try for an uptown girl? ('I bet her mother never told her why I'm gonna try for an uptown girl'.)

The 'I bet her mother never told her why' line can connect with either the preceding or the following line. Once again, Senator Ambiguity raises her venomous hide. I'd get furious about this, but, engh... it hardly seems worth the effort. It is, after all, only Billy Joel. Or (depending on your perspective) a punchline.

Begone,

Indy
