Interpreter Unravels Siege Crisis

Hostage situation

Filed: Wednesday, April 11, 2001

A siege at the Colombian consulate ended peacefully with the aid of a passing interpreter. Early reports suggested that the group went into the consulate shouting in Spanish "Ole! muchos pistola, e fatalitie les bangola bangola" ("we are heavily armed and will shoot you all")

After many hours of negotiations, it was eventually realised by the do-gooding interpreter (whose identity remains shrouded in mystery) that they were actually shouting "Ole! Nachos pestile, e futilitie les burgola burgola?" ("Your nachos are pestilent, would it be futile to ask for a burger... or two?")

So that's all right then.
