Watchmen

Just saw the Watchmen movie and my immediate response is this: there is a reason why ‘Watchmen’ is an anagram of ‘awesome‘ (which it is if you also steal some letters from ‘bitchin’).

Is it better than the Watchmen comic book (or ‘graphic novel’ if you prefer, snooterinos)? No. Is it as good as the Director’s Cut which has been released in the future (to adopt a Dr Manhattan-esque viewpoint momentarily)? No. You can see in the theatrical version exactly where the DVD version wants to flex its muscles and how, once it does, that will improve the overall experience of kickass superhero Watchmenerifficness.

But, hell, one could not reasonably expect a better version of the story to be shown on a cinema screen. Much like Jacko’s Lord of the Ringses or Nolan’s Batman movies or that movie in my head where Superman joins forces with the Green Lantern Corps and The A Team to fight the Death Star commanded by Dr Doom and flanked by mutant Godzilla Terminator Decepticons , this is an adaptation for the big screen all true geeks will salute with whole-hearted ‘hell yeah’-edness.

Only with, y’know, more blue penises.

Oh, aye. Well worth the look. Not perfect, but, heck, awesome enough for me to get my geek on.

Watchmen felt right. Sure, it was an over condensed one…
And would have been better as a 5 part mini series….
The sex, while, well, sexy, felt like it detracted from what was going on to me.

I know it is somewhat accurate, but you gotta admit, for having the near power of a god, free-balling most the way through. I give Dr. M some major credit their.

I wonder how long the DVD version will be? I've heard rumours it will be closer to 4 hours (ie, Extended Return of the King-esque in length). I'm hoping Senor Snyder uses that extra hour or so to flesh out some of the secondary characters, provide further detail on Silk Spectre's relationship with her mother and, uh, the man revealed to be her father (I'm assuming I still need to be spoiler-friendly on this front), give Adrian a bit more screen time (also, explain Bubastis – I have no idea what a non-comic book-reading viewer would have made of the giant lynx wandering around Antarctica) then I'll be real durn happy.

I don't need any extra footage of Jon's blue balls or Rorschach putting large knives through the heads of child murderers. What we got in the cinematic release is just enough. Thanks very much.
