The Working Insane
Y’know what I love? The notion of things being ’so crazy they just might work’. If I was in charge of a research facility trying to unravel cosmic mysteries (such as string theory or the chart-topping success of Macarena), I’d probably eschew the recognised experts in the field and instead go to the local insane asylum, where I’d hire as many inmates as possible and set them to work.
Oh, sure, some might scoff at my idea of using certified lunatics as research scientists in a desperate bid to broaden our understanding of the riddles of the universe, but, hey, who knows. The idea’s so crazy it just might work…

You know Dan, using lunatics to solve such riddles isn't as implausible as it might seem. It might succeed if their insanity is simply the price they paid for their perspicacity.
True. The saying could also work in reverse: “He works so hard he must be crazy”

There is a tradition in some regions of revering 'crazy people' as being holy and mystical.

Good point, Bob. Of course, the reverse is also true. Particularly among radical atheists.
