Gullies And Gullibility
In an enchanting contrast to today’s cricket autobiographies with their simple tales of heroic alcoholism, I have recently been blessed with a copy of Jane Austen’s rarely discussed cricketing novel of manners – ‘Gullies and Gullibility’ (‘Mr Darcy, until you can maintain a deferential line and length from the bowling crease, I suggest you shall never truly appreciate a maiden’ ‘Oh, do shut up, Miss Bennett,’ he said, wittily unleashing a malicious bouncer that struck her square in the temple.) The steamy sex scene between W G Grace and an unfortunate mallard is both educational and highly arousing.
